A Scout is...
Our Mission Statement
As the Boy Scouts of America's flagship program, Boy Scouting, has changed with the times to allow girls and young women to join and was relaunched as Scouts BSA in 2019, Troop 262 and its members have also changed since its formation in 1959, but its focus remains the same as in the beginning: to impart the values embodied by the Scout Oath and Law to the boys and young men in our troop. Its leaders not only focus on teaching Scout and life skills, such as camping, backpacking, cooking, personal fitness, and resource management, but we also believe that leadership and community service should be the foundation of our organization; we serve the people and community that has supported and continues to support us.
About Troop 262
Troop 262 is chartered by Dalewood United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee and is part of the Centennial District of the Middle Tennessee Council. Current BSA policy, as of February 2019, allows for single-gender Scouts BSA troops (either all male or female youth members aged 11 to 17, but not both in the same troop); at this time, Troop 262 is remaining male-youth-only, with no current plans to assist in raising an affiliated female youth troop. The troop currently meets every Monday night from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM (except during most holidays during the school year) and works on Scout skills and advancement during part of the meeting, while also trying to plan at least one camping trip or special event every month or two. The troop's adult leadership always tries to make sure that all troop activities are planned and carried out by the Scouts themselves, with minimal input from us whenever possible. We feel that by operating the troop in the traditional "patrol" method, the Senior Patrol Leader and their staff (including the individual Patrol and Assistant Patrol Leaders) has a greater appreciation for responsibility and what it takes to be the leader of a group; it also gives the patrol members more input into planning and carrying out the activities in which they are involved.
